a poem: joy

I watched the Joy Luck Club when I was in elementary school
never with a sense that I could ever be too cool
because the summers were still summers
and fall had yet to bleed into the sun-dripped horizon.

I scarcely remember what lessons I was meant to learn
beyond a scant desperate yearning…
